Philipp Lilie

Dr. rer. nat. Dipl.-Phys.

Vita

Philipp Lilie earned a Master’s-level degree in physics in 1998, with a focus on laser and plasma physics. He later received his PhD in surface physics and conducted research at several international institutions, including the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States and European research centers.

From an early age, Philipp Lilie has worked extensively with digital systems. His long-standing hands-on experience with hardware and software, IT architectures, and algorithmic methods forms a core foundation of his professional practice. This background enables him to advise on complex software- and AI-based technologies with a deep understanding of their technical implementation, data flows, and system architectures.

Since qualifying as a German Patent Attorney in 2005 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2006, Philipp Lilie has been advising clients on the acquisition, enforcement, and defense of intellectual property rights. He has extensive experience in opposition and appeal proceedings before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, the European Patent Office, and the German Federal Patent Court.

A particular focus of his practice is the strategic representation of technology-driven companies, especially in the areas of software and artificial intelligence. His work includes drafting and prosecuting sophisticated patent applications, defending and challenging AI- and software-related patents, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and supporting licensing negotiations and out-of-court settlements. Clients value his ability to translate highly complex technical concepts into clear, legally robust, and commercially meaningful IP strategies.

In addition, Philipp Lilie is a certified business mediator (Chamber of Commerce and Industry), regularly assisting clients in resolving technology-related disputes efficiently and pragmatically.
